Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil is urging internet service providers (ISPs) to offer more affordable high-speed packages to citizens. He noted that companies have the capacity to offer competitive pricing for high-speed broadband, particularly citing packages as low as RM39 per month for 100Mbps speeds. This recommendation comes from his observations through the implementation of the Point of Presence (PoP) programme, which is part of the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA).

One of the primary goals of the PoP project is to reduce the digital divide in rural Malaysia. By using schools as hubs for fibre optic broadband infrastructure, the project aims to provide high-speed internet access not only to educational institutions but also to government buildings and nearby residential areas, ensuring that all Malaysians have access to reliable and fast internet services.

Speaking to reporters during a media conference after the launch of the Perajurit Broadband initiative earlier today, Fahmi highlighted that some ISPs had already introduced 100Mbps packages priced around RM49, with certain areas seeing offers as low as RM39. He pointed out that, moving forward, these more affordable rates should become standard practice, especially for projects carried out under JENDELA and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Fahmi stressed that this effort is not solely a commercial venture but also serves a strategic national objective. Beyond improving physical access to broadband, the initiative seeks to boost the economy by enhancing digital connectivity across Malaysia. He added that by bridging the digital divide, it can open up new economic opportunities, particularly in underserved areas.
