The company is apparently planning a gradual rollout between 2027 and 2028.

Last month, Microsoft announced Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC, a programme which allows gamers to play classic Xbox titles across PC and handhelds. Now, it seems that the company is building on the idea. According to a report by The Verge, Microsoft is planning to bring Xbox 360 games to PC as well.

This information reportedly originates from a leaked document shared with developers. As per the paperwork, developers will have the option to make their Xbox 360 games backward compatible, allowing them to run on the upcoming Project Helix console, as well as other devices including handhelds and PCs. Furthermore, the developers will have control over details like the game’s pricing and availability on Game Pass.

Apparently, if this all goes according to plan, the feature will roll out gradually between 2027 and 2028. In the meantime, the recently announced Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC is slated for a “full launch” in October 2026. At the moment, that programme only covers four titles. That said, data miners quickly discovered that the company is essentially using an Xbox 360 emulator for the feature, so running Xbox 360 games isn’t too far ahead.

In addition to this, the leaked document offers more detail on the upcoming disc-to-digital feature. Essentially, physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X games placed in console disc drives will grant a digital licence tied to the disc and the player’s account. This licence will remain with the player across devices, although it can be transferred to another person should the disc change hands. In theory, this should enable trading and selling.

As outlined in Microsoft’s roadmap, the public beta for this disc-to-digital programme was set for July, but was delayed. Following the original plan, the feature should be generally available this month. But given the delay, it’s uncertain whether an August launch is still in the cards.

Either way, these initiatives underscore Microsoft’s efforts to adapt to an increasingly digital landscape. The company previously revealed that Project Helix will be able to run PC games, and making its Xbox titles available on PC will help keep its catalogue accessible. It’s possible that Microsoft will follow in Sony’s footsteps and do away with discs altogether, but at the very least it seems that it’s not leaving physical media owners in the dust. At least for now, anyway.
