The Huawei Mate XT 2 is set to debut as the proper successor to the Mate XT. Ahead of its launch, rumours of a redesign circulated online, claiming that the tri-fold smartphone will adopt a folding mechanism like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Trifold. Now, the Chinese company has shared a video teaser for the handset, confirming that it will indeed feature an inward-folding design.
In this teaser, the smartphone is seen in a new purple finish. Colour aside, the clip shows the device unfolding, revealing the new U-shaped design. While it does resemble Samsung’s triple-panel smartphone, the Mate XT 2 does differ slightly. The most obvious distinction is the placement of the camera module. Huawei’s design positions it on the middle panel. Other than that, the folding order is flipped. To put it simply, the new design pretty much matches the leak.
Of course, this is a pretty radical change from the original Mate XT. The Z-shaped folding mechanism offered users three different screen sizes. The swap makes this no longer possible. Furthermore, a separate cover display is now needed to ensure the phone is usable when folded. That said, the new design does have a notable advantage. The flexible inner screen is now protected when the phone is in its folded state, which should ensure better longevity.
Moving beyond looks, the company has not revealed much about the upcoming phone. So far, leaks point to a Kirin 9050 Pro SoC. That said, the phone is also rumoured to feature a Kirin 9030s chipset, much like the one equipped on the recently announced Pura X View. Other supposed features include a 6,000mAh battery and 3D facial recognition. On the imaging end, it could come with a 50MP primary shooter, a 50MP periscope telephoto lens, and a 40MP ultra-wide sensor.
As always, leaks are to be taken with a grain of salt. We will have full confirmation once the device officially launches. Speaking of which, the foldable is set to debut in China on 7 September 2026.
