Samsung introduced the wide-body Galaxy Z Fold8 this year as a sort of new form factor, and moved up the standard Fold to the Ultra. It looks like the South Korean tech giant is trying to do the same again next year, and introduce another wide form factor foldable to its lineup. This could bring the total number of foldables that the company releases next year up to five, with the brand taking another shot at its luxury TriFold as well.
Korean outlet ETNews reports that the passport-sized Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 has received a warm enough reception that it warrants another go. But beyond that, multiple sources claimed that “another Wide Fold development project has been pursued recently”, but since this is still in its initial stages, its specs are not set in stone yet. One thing that looks to be certain is that “it will be a plan to make a screen ratio more optimised for viewing videos than the 4:3 screen ratio launched this year”.

To some degree, this makes sense. With a 4:3 aspect ratio, the wider consensus looks to be that, because most videos are in 16:9, letterboxing is also part of the experience. For something that’s “more optimised” for viewing 16:9 content though, it would mean that the device would be even wider, even stouter, or both. But at that point, one could argue that it would be indistinguishable from a stouter clamshell-style Flip entry.
Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold Gets A Sequel

Adding the new, wider model to the existing three foldables brings us to four. So what of that fifth foldable? The report indicates that Samsung is giving the Galaxy Z TriFold another go as well, and it’s also targeting a launch next year. That being said, it’s unclear if this will specifically be part of the Galaxy Z 9 family of foldables.
