It’s unfortunately another episode of a Windows 11 update conflicting with existing software and causing issues. This time, it looks to be related to RGB lighting software and their related components and peripherals. When running certain games, this conflict can cause said games to freeze, close unexpectedly, or even force a restart on your PC. Or, if your game keeps running, you may get the error message “EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION” popping up and interrupting your game.
This affects the Windows 11 update KB5121003 that was released on 11 August, with the issue being narrowed down to certain RGB software installing drivers with “file names similar to “inpoutx64”. Three games have been listed specifically as being affected by this issue. These are ARC Raiders, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, and The Finals. For what it’s worth, Microsoft says that there is a workaround while waiting for a fix.
The fix in question, though, involves “temporarily disabling the inpoutx64 driver using Windows registry”, so it’s definitely not something that you should try unless you know what you’re doing. And even when you do, it may cause issues with the RGB features on peripherals or components instead.
But if you’re set on putting the workaround to use, you can open the Start menu, type “regedit”, and select the Registry Editor that shows up in the results. From there, navigate to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\inpoutx64” by either typing that into the address line or navigating from the folders on the left. Then, find the registry value named “Start”, double-click it, look for the field titled “Value data”, and enter the number four. Be sure to note down the previous value, so that you can change it back in case the workaround starts causing issues to your RGB parts.
Two Games By Embark Studios
Microsoft says that it is currently investigating the interaction between these RGB-related components and the affected games within Windows 11. No word on when a fix will be ready, but the company says that additional details will be provided as they become available. It’s slightly notable that of the three games mentioned, two of them are developed by Embark Studios. Marvel Tokon, on the other hand, is developed by Arc System Works, and it already has enough problems of its own.
