When NVIDIA first announced DLSS 5, the tech was meant to be exclusive to its latest, greatest and priciest GeForce RTX 50-series graphics cards. And even then, only one game is known so far to have gotten the tech, at least on an official basis, which is NBA 2K27. But since modders have managed to get the tech to run on the RTX 40-series cards, and possibly even older, and on just about any game, the company said that it will be working to bring the tech to the RTX 40-series cards later.
The Verge cites a statement from NVIDIA spokesperson Rajal Maharaj as saying that “our current focus is on optimising performance for the GeForce RTX 50-Series with model updates expected later this fall. Once RTX 50-Series performance is more fully tuned, we plan to work on expanding official support to the GeForce RTX 40-Series”. But when the outlet asked about even older cards such as the RTX 30- and RTX 20-series cards, Maharaj dodged the question, repeating “once we feel like the 50-series is in a good place, we’re going to look at the 40-series”.
Either way, NVIDIA intends for gamers to only have the option of on or off as far as DLSS 5 is concerned. “The more granular artistic controls are for developers, including model selection, Structure Intensity, Tone Intensity, automatic masking and custom per-pixel masking”, the company said. This is despite modders having access to just about full control of the tech. But for what it’s worth, game devs could pass some of these controls to gamers in their own games’ settings menus like any other graphics tech.
If you remember, NVIDIA demo-ed the tech at GTC 2026 back in March with multiple games, including Resident Evil Requiem, (in)famously. The report mentions trying to get the company to re-confirm that it will also come to games featured back then, all the company said was “more games are on the way. Many developers are actively integrating DLSS 5, and we’ll share updates on upcoming titles as partners finalise their integrations”. The report speculates that this is because the initial backlash to the tech may have scared off publishers that were initially enthusiastic about the tech.
