Back in March, we saw leaks pointing at a LEGO and PlayStation collaboration. Now, the product of that collaboration has gotten its official announcement. This comes in the form of the first generation PlayStation console, plus one of the original pre-DualShock controllers with no analogue sticks. The set also includes references to two games available on the console, but we’ll get to that later.
The LEGO PlayStation set comes in at 1,911 pieces which, as mentioned previously, is not as extreme as the Nintendo NES and Atari 2600 sets. But once it’s all been built up, Sony Interactive Entertainment says that it will be a near 1:1 scale of the console. The set also “has functional mechanisms for the console’s Power and Open buttons”, but the company did not elaborate on what a Power button on the brick replica of the console will do. The open button is pretty obvious, and relates to the aforementioned references, which we’ll talk about next.
Hidden away in the sides of the set though are references to both Gran Turismo and Ape Escape. The former is a very tiny diorama of a race track complete with scaled down cars, while the latter is “a nostalgic island scene”, but more importantly, “a swappable blue or red light on the monkey’s helmet”. You can leave these dioramas hidden away, leave them out on display, or just open the disc lid and show both off at the same time while they’re still tucked inside the console’s body.
On one hand, there isn’t a PlayStation Blog post specific to Southeast Asia for this set yet, which would normally include a price for the local market. But on the other, that may not be entirely necessary, as the Malaysian page for the LEGO online store already has the set listed. It’s priced at RM699, and will be available starting 4 October.
