Looking back at the history of the Apple Watch, its overall design has seen relatively few major changes over the years. However, that could eventually change, as a recent report claims that the tech giant is exploring new designs and models to shake up its wearable lineup. Among the concepts reportedly being considered are an Apple Watch with a round display and another variant without a display altogether.
The information comes from Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, who reported the details in his Power On newsletter. According to the report, Apple is considering these changes as it faces growing competition from companies offering a wider variety of wearable devices. Gurman also reports that the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, which are expected to debut in September, will receive more modest upgrades, including a more powerful processor.

The reason behind Apple’s reported interest in a screenless wearable could be its desire to compete with the likes of the Whoop, Fitbit Air, and Garmin Cirqa. Alternatively, we could also see an Apple Watch with a round display instead of its familiar rectangular design. However, Gurman did not explain why Apple is considering this variant, noting that it is “unlikely [to] hit the market”.
Beyond new designs, Gurman also reports that Apple is considering expanding its Apple Watch lineup with additional models. Citing sources familiar with the matter, he says the company could introduce a new premium model positioned above the existing Ultra and Hermès variants. Similarly, the Bloomber writer says that Apple is “considering more affordable concepts besides the current SE model”.

Additionally, Gurman claims that the tech giant is “plotting” the return of a ceramic case option, which could arrive “either this year or next”. The company is also reportedly considering new colours, bands, and “a series of new health and fitness-related upgrades”. However, he notes that Apple has yet to settle on a single direction at the time of writing. Despite this, he says the company “is determined to reinvent the lineup in response to growing competition”.
With all that said, do keep in mind that these are still rumours at the end of the day. While Gurman has a well-known track record when it comes to reporting on Apple and its products, the company has yet to confirm any of these details. As such, it is best to err on the side of caution and take this information with a grain of salt until Apple officially announces its plans.
