The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is facing renewed calls to address persistent technical problems with its MyJPJ app. According to a former Member of Parliament, the platform is failing to deliver the convenience expected from a digital public service.
In a statement, former Tenom MP Datuk Raime Unggi said he had personally encountered problems while trying to register on the app. He also said he had received complaints from other users about crashes, sluggish response times and failed online transactions.
The situation is made more frustrating by the fact that users who encounter problems may still have to visit a JPJ branch for assistance. According to Raime, hotline officers have been directing stranded users to resolve their issues in person, effectively undermining the purpose of having a digital platform in the first place.
“Digitalisation is meant to simplify public services, not create more bureaucracy and inconvenience,” Raime said in a statement. He questioned why the government would push a digital service if members of the public are still required to travel to physical counters when the app fails.
Raime also highlighted the potential impact on people living in rural areas, who may have to spend considerable time and money travelling to a JPJ branch simply because they are unable to complete a process through the app. He called for JPJ and the Transport Ministry to conduct a full review of the platform, including ensuring that the app is stable and that support staff are properly trained to troubleshoot issues. He warned that leaving these technical problems unresolved could eventually undermine public confidence in government digitalisation initiatives.
The concerns come at a time when MyJPJ has become increasingly important as JPJ moves more of its services online. At the time of writing, however, JPJ has yet to issue a response to the complaints.
