Volvo Car Malaysia has introduced the new Volvo EX30 Cross Country, a ruggedised version of its compact, fully electric SUV designed for those who want to explore beyond the city. Locally assembled in Malaysia, the model is priced at RM218,888 on the road without insurance.

The EX30 Cross Country also revives Volvo’s iconic Cross Country nameplate, which was first introduced on the V70 XC in 1997. It is the first fully electric model to carry the suffix in Malaysia, drawing on the brand’s long-standing focus on comfort and confidence across different road conditions.

Rugged, With Increased Ground Clearance

Compared to the standard EX30, the Cross Country receives several exterior revisions to give it a more rugged appearance. These include blackened front and rear sections, front and rear skid plates, uncoloured wheel arch extensions and mudguards.

The model rides 19 mm higher than the standard EX30, while unique 19-inch wheels further enhance its raised stance. It also comes with a roof basket as part of the Malaysian launch package, adding to its outdoor-oriented appearance and providing additional carrying capacity.

The front of the vehicle features artwork inspired by the topography of the Kebnekaise mountain range in Arctic Sweden. Three exterior colours are available: Crystal White, Vapour Grey and Cloud Blue, all paired with an Indigo interior featuring textile and Nordico upholstery, as well as denim-coloured door panels.

Additional Storage

The EX30 Cross Country retains the minimalist cabin design of the standard EX30, although Volvo has made several changes to improve storage practicality. The front door speakers have been removed, with audio output instead handled by a soundbar mounted on the dashboard, allowing for larger storage compartments in both front doors.

Additional storage is available in the central storage tunnel, which can slide out to function as a cupholder or retract to provide more room. A larger storage compartment is also positioned on the floor between the front occupants, while the glove compartment has been relocated to the centre console for easier access by both the driver and front passenger.

Rear passengers get a removable and washable storage box beneath the central tunnel. Volvo says this can also be used as a waste bin, making it useful for longer journeys and outdoor activities.

Dual-Motor AWD Performance

The EX30 Cross Country is now the sole dual-motor, all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant in Malaysia’s EX30 range, following the discontinuation of the EX30 Ultra Twin Performance. Its taller suspension and chunkier exterior styling, however, come with a slight penalty in terms of range and acceleration.

The electric SUV is powered by a 69 kWh battery pack, of which 65 kWh is usable, based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. It offers a claimed range of up to 437 km under the WLTP testing cycle, compared to 450 km for the standard EX30.

The EX30 Cross Country takes 3.7 seconds to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h, while its top speed remains electronically limited to 180 km/h. For charging, the vehicle supports up to 11 kW AC charging, which takes approximately eight hours to fully replenish the battery.

DC fast charging at up to 175 kW can bring the battery from 10% to 80% in around 27 minutes. This should make the model reasonably practical for longer journeys, provided suitable charging infrastructure is available along the route.

Pricing And Availability

The locally assembled Volvo EX30 Cross Country is priced at RM218,888, on the road without insurance. It comes with a five-year, unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty and an eight-year or 160,000 km battery warranty, while the model is available for viewing at all authorised Volvo dealers nationwide.

To mark the launch, Volvo Car Malaysia is offering the first 100 buyers a package worth nearly RM21,800. This consists of a RM12,000 cash rebate, a complimentary Volvo Wallbox worth RM3,990, a load carrier worth RM2,098 and a roof basket worth RM3,680.
