Dyson has developed and launched a few eccentric products, to say the least. But the recently unveiled CameraJet takes the cake. Why? Because it is a smart electric toothbrush with a built-in camera that operates with the help of machine learning.
What’s It About?
The main gimmick of this dental cleaner is that it automatically flosses the user’s teeth while they brush, and the device does this with the aforementioned camera. Dyson explains that the “100k” pixel macro lens camera takes pictures of the user’s mouth (28 images in a single second to be exact) and then submits them to the onboard software.
The software, which is actually the company’s own AI called the Gap Optical Targeting, scans for any gaps between the teeth. When it spots one, the AI will command a small pump that shoots a pressurised jet of mouthrinse into space within a tenth of a second. Dyson claims that the system can detect a gap and activate the jet within 100ms of the camera seeing it. Oh, it also comes with a strobe light so the AI can see while the toothbrush is in the user’s mouth.
What’s Cleaning Your Teeth?
For the floss specifically, the CameraJet uses a conical jet rather than a traditional needle-type jet. The company claims that this allows the device to remove more plaque while also being gentler on the gums and enamel.
On the other hand, the electric toothbrush uses, what the company calls, a “variable sonic oscillation”, which can supposedly remove 69% more plaque than traditional electric toothbrushes. Dyson claims that this system also prevents the bristles from stalling when it is pressed too hard against the user’s teeth. The brand adds that users can choose between automatic and manual jetting modes and adjust the brushing intensity.
Lastly, each brush head comes with its own RFID chip that helps track how long the head has been used. This chip can also automatically send alerts to the consumer’s phone to let them know when it’s time for a replacement. It is also worth noting that Dyson developed its own non-foaming toothpaste and mouthrinse to go along with the CameraJet. The non-foaming toothpaste is necessary so it doesn’t interfere with the camera.
Filling Up The Tank And Batteries
As you might have guessed, the CameraJet comes with a 12.5ml mouthrinse tank built-in which dispenses through the nozzle. To be more precise, it is an anti-gravity tank with a diaphragm pump and pressure chamber which the company claims allows the device to shoot jets in any orientation.
Being an electric toothbrush, it should come as no surprise that the device comes with a base station where it can rest and recharge its batteries. Although the press release omitted how long the battery lasts, let alone the time required to reach a full charge, it did note that refilling the mouthrinse tank takes a mere three seconds.
Livestream Your Mouth
As hinted in the previous paragraph, users can connect the toothbrush to a smartphone app over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Doing so allows the track to keep track of their brushing habits and warns them if they’re using the wrong techniques.
Since there is a camera, consumers can watch a livestream of their mouth as they are cleaning it in real time through the MyDyson app. Dyson says that the camera is only on when it’s doing the live viewing or when the automatic jetting function is active. The company adds that the images captured are not recorded or saved within the device or in the cloud.
Pricing And Availability
Dyson Malaysia confirmed that the product is coming to Malaysia and will come in Ceramic Pink and Ceramic Ultra Blue colourways. However, the company did not specify when it will be available for purchase and for how much. However, as indicated by the title, the product has a pre-order price of US$499 (~RM2,017) in the US. The product is available in Singapore and is priced at SGD699 (~RM2,826).
