SK Hynix is one of three major memory makers in the world, after Samsung and Micron, that have been reaping the benefits of the memory shortage and boom. However, this hasn’t necessarily bode well for consumers, especially if they’re getting a warranty replacement for products from the brand.
According to one Redditor, they tried to reach out to SK Hynix regarding a malfunctioning SSD that was still under warranty. Instead of replacing it, the memory maker refunded the customer the original price at which they purchased it.
It is surmised that the reason SK Hynix decided to refund rather than replace is simply that it was the cheaper option: the company’s warranty policy for SSDs explicitly states, “In lieu of a Product repair or replacement, the original purchaser may receive a refund of either the original purchase price or the fair market value, whichever is lower.”
Simply put, because of how rampant the price of memory is right now, and with the price of SSDs having more than doubled across the board since last year, coupled with the aforementioned shortage, SK Hynix clearly went with the more economical option, albeit to the disadvantage of the consumer.

SK Hynix isn’t the only memory maker to find itself in this situation. Back in June, consumer rights activist Louis Rossmann aired his dirty laundry with Samsung, after the latter reportedly chose not to honour the warranty for Rossmann’s faulty 990 Pro SSD.
Rossmann told Samsung in no uncertain terms that he expects Samsung to replace the faulty SSD with a brand new unit, to which the Korean giant said that it did not have his model or a comparable SSD available for replacement, a lie that Rossmann quickly dispelled by showing on screen that the Samsung US Store on Amazon did indeed have stock, albeit at three times the original price he paid for it.
