Videogames peripheral brand Razer has made some pretty out-of-left-field products before, but they’ve all still served practical uses to varying degrees. It doesn’t look like the company is keen on keeping the streak going, as it has put up a page on its website for something pretty extra – a fancy keycap, and a very pricey one at that. It will drop in slightly over a week, and if you’re interested, you can register your interest for the thing.
It’s officially called the Razer Artisan Keycap – Triple-Headed Snake Edition, though the second half of the name seems a bit superfluous, much like the item itself. After all, while the company does sell keycaps for its keyboards, they are all pretty bog-standard and not particularly deserving of the artisan label. This could be taken as an indication that the brand intends to do more, though with the three snakes being the brand’s signature anyway, it’s difficult to imagine any other design the company would go for.
As for the keycap itself, Razer makes a big deal about the way it’s resin-cast and individually hand-painted. By technicality, no two pieces will be exactly alike, and probably something that those who paint their tabletop minis would appreciate more than others. Despite this, the company has made them compatible with any keyboard that uses cross-stem switches, so you don’t have to specifically use them with the brand’s own keyboards.
All that being said though, the main question to be answered is: would you pay US$89.99 (~RM368) for a keycap? That’s the price of the Razer Artisan Keycap – Triple-Headed Snake Edition, according to the US site. For better or worse, there’s no price listed on the local site, but you can still register your interest for the item from there. And on that note, the drop is slated to happen on 23 August at 10AM local time.
