Selfie drones and pocket gimbal cameras belong in separate product categories, but HOVERAir is aiming to combine the two in a single device. Enter the Versa, the brand’s first-ever pocket camera. Of course, what sets it apart from existing products is its ability to transform into a self-flying drone within seconds, thanks to a detachable propeller-wing module. This pretty much makes it the world’s first pocket camera that can fly.
In its default state, the Versa looks like your average pocket camera, not unlike the ones offered by the likes of DJI. The device sports a 3-axis gimbal, allowing it to deliver smooth and stable footage. It also comes with a built-in rotating screen, RGB accent lighting that doubles as a status indicator, as well as some physical controls.
As per the Versa’s product page, it boasts an “industry-leading image processor” that offers superior dynamic range. In theory, the camera should be able to preserve bright highlights, vibrant colours, and shadow detail. The brand also promises “incredible” low-light footage. Whether the imaging performance is as impressive as advertised remains to be seen, but that’s not the 2-in-1 device’s claim to fame. That would be its ability to take to the skies.
To get the Versa off the ground, the user must first snap on the lightweight foldable drone body. The wings attach magnetically to the camera unit via a set of pogo pins. Once this is done, the user has to unfold the wings. Then, with the push of a button, the drone can take off right from the user’s palm. In this form, it leverages an AI-driven tracking system to follow the subject, so no external remote is necessary. It also comes with more than 10 intelligent flight modes and an AI framing feature for composing shots.
Additionally, the 3D Worlds feature lets the drone execute a 360-degree flight pattern and reconstruct the shots to create a three-dimensional scene. According to the brand, this shareable image can be viewed from any angle using any device.

For now, HOVERAir has not disclosed the Versa’s specifications. Similarly, availability and pricing details are up in the air, so we will have to wait for further information. It’s also worth keeping in mind that the brand does not have an official local presence at the moment. So, those looking to get their hands on the hybrid device may need to acquire it through third party distributors.
