The national carmaker, Proton launched its first-ever EV production facility at the Automotive Hi-Tech Valley in Tanjong Malim, Perak, on 4 September 2025. During the launch, it also revealed that Zeekr models will be locally assembled (CKD) at the facility in the near future.

This milestone was made possible through Proton’s partnership with Zhejiang Geely Holding Ltd (Geely). In addition, the national automaker has announced that the facility will also be open to other premium brands under the Geely Group.

With an annual production capacity of 20,000 units, and the potential to scale up to 45,000 units, this development is set to make a significant impact on the local automotive industry. It also opens the door for many Geely-owned EV brands to enter the CKD market, a move that could greatly influence vehicle pricing and, ultimately, benefit consumers.

“The launch of this state-of-the-art EV plant marks a historic milestone for PROTON and Malaysia’s automotive industry, “ said  CEO of Proton, Dr. Li Chunrong. “This facility, built with advanced technology and a focus on scalability, will be the backbone of our commitment to producing world-class electric vehicles.”

On the other hand, Zeekr has been steadily building a strong presence in the local market. So far, it has introduced three models — the Zeekr X, Zeekr 009, and Zeekr 7X. The Chinese automaker has also established its own National Sales Company in Malaysia.

Besides that, it also appointed Carro to be its officla dealership in the country. Now with the opportunity to produce CKD models locally, Zeekr is now poised to strengthen its position even further in the country’s EV segment.

Apart from Zeekr, several other brands have also recently announced CKD operations in Malaysia. BYD has revealed plans to establish its own CKD plant, while Leapmotor has confirmed that its C10 model will be locally assembled.
