With the official announcement of the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X and Ally, AMD has also pulled back the veil from its two new Z2 APUs, the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and Z2 A. The two processors join the Ryzen Z2 family, adding both a top-tier and base-level model to the fold.

To recap, AMD officially announced the Z2 Series of processor back during CES 2025. the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme is basically a mirror image of the non-AI version of the chip, the main difference being the addition of AMD’s APU, providing it 50 TOPs of performance. AMD didn’t mention how the gaming handheld APU’s additional NPU would work but presumably, it could be tasked towards handling power consumption and battery efficiency on future consoles.

Moving on, the Z2 A is an APU that site at the bottom of list. While it shouldn’t be confused with the Ryzen Z2 Go, it’s actually got the same number of cores and threads as it, as well as the same RDNA2 graphics cores, just two cores less. It also only comes with a 6MB total cache, which really makes us wonder about the kind of performance the APU would deliver.

As these are AMD-based components, the new Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and Z2 A will support AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), Radeon Super Resolution, and AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) technologies. For that matter, the red chipmaker expects its new processors to be used in gaming handhelds beyond the new ROG Xbox Ally series of consoles.
