TNG Digital has announced that its e-wallet platform, TNG eWallet, now enables international tourists to sign up for an account and make cashless transactions. This allows foreigners to easily make QR payments to local vendors and even reload their enhanced Touch ‘n Go cards.

To sign up for the e-wallet as a foreigner, you only need a passport with at least six months of validity and a WhatsApp account linked to a phone number from one of the supported countries. Currently, the platform only supports phone numbers from ASEAN countries, including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, but the company says it will gradually expand to include China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and more.

Once registered, tourists can reload their e-wallet balance through a debit or credit card, global remittance services, or reload PINs. Keep in mind, however, that TNG eWallet charges a fee of up to 2.6% for reloads using cards from non-Malaysian banks. Some features on the app, such as investment and insurance services, will not be available to foreign users.

Cash withdrawals of their e-wallet balance will also not be available for tourists, but the app can still be used to make QR payments in other supported countries. This initiative adds on to TNG eWallet’s ease of registration initiatives, following its recent move to allow refugees in Malaysia to sign up for its e-wallet.
