Meta has finally made Edits, its in-house video creation app and CapCut rival, available for iOS and Android users globally. It was initially slated for a 13 March launch for iOS, but Meta ended up delaying the app’s release. To use the app, users must first sign in with their Instagram accounts.

As with any other video-editing software, Edits has a timeline feature for arranging and adjusting clips, as well as a selection of tools and effects the user can use. Meta does advertise a “longer camera capture” of up to ten minutes as one of the app’s advantages, however. Additionally, there is an Ideas tool that lets users write down their ideas for videos, as well as an Inspirations section for browsing through reels by others. From there, the user can use the audio in these reels for their own projects. Naturally, there are some AI-powered tools, like the Animate feature which allows users to turn static images into videos.

While projects created in Edits can be shared directly to Instagram and Facebook from the app, users can also export the videos to be shared on other platforms. The exported videos are watermark-free, which may give Edits an edge over CapCut, as exporting a video without an added watermark is a paid feature for the latter. Edits also features an Insights page that allows users to see how well their creations are received by their audience.

In the post announcing the app’s release, Meta stated that it is already working on features to be added later, including keyframes, AI effects, and collaboration tools. It also promises the addition of more creative elements such as fonts, text animations, transitions, voice effects, filters, and royalty-free music. There may also be some paid features coming to future versions of the app, according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri.
