While rumours of tri-folding smartphones started popping up a good while ago, it has only recently manifested in something people can buy, with the first example being the Huawei Mate XT. Despite the apparent difficulty of producing the first example, it looks like that doesn’t quite apply to subsequent, well, sequels. New rumours point to the Chinese tech giant may be ready to sell a second one as soon as next year.

Huawei Central, a site which has its primary focus on said tech giant, shared a screenshot of a translated post from Chinese social media Weibo by leakster Fixed Focus Digital. In it, the leakster says that “Z should have a small upgrade by the end of this year or middle of next year. The changes are not big, mainly in imaging and chips, to make up for the shortcomings at this stage”. The letter Z is likely referring to the way the device folds.

The report goes on to mention multi-spectral lens, tech that was first introduced with the Huawei Mate70 series, to be part of the imaging improvements to the next tri-folder. As for the chip improvement, it kind of goes without saying but if there is any improvement here it would more than likely mean a newer Kirin chip. A separate screenshot attributed to another Chinese leakster is also included here drive the point.

For now though, nothing else is known about this next Huawei tri-fold to succeed the Mate XT, though it’s probably also fair to say that nothing is known at all. Time will tell whether the claimed launch window is accurate, but you probably shouldn’t hold your breath for it.
