[UPDATE: 23 May 2024 – 5:15pm] U Mobile has reached out to us, informing of a new update to its GX55 FAQ page. The telco now declares that the postpaid plan’s unlimited speed will not be affected by any speed cap when streaming video or audio related content, ensuring for an uninterrupted experience.

[ORIGINAL STORY: 17 May 2024 – 7:57pm]

Users under U Mobile’s Giler Unlimited (GX50) legacy postpaid plan will receive an automatic upgrade to the new GX55 refresh, effective immediately. The telco informed customers of this change via a notice sent through SMS issued today.

In terms of offerings, the only significant change on GX55 is the removal of the 5Mbps speed cap from its predecessor, while everything else remains the same. To be more specific, users will still get unlimited data usage and domestic calls, while Hotspot usage retains a data cap of 5GB per cycle.

However, there is a catch in regards to the uncapped speed. According to U Mobile’s FAQ page, despite allowing for unlimited music and video streaming, quality for the latter is locked to standard definition. Meanwhile, exceeding the 5GB hotspot quota, as before, will see speeds throttled up to 64kbps.

The other caveat is the change of pricing. As implied by its name, monthly fees will see a hike to RM55 per month, but only from 21 June 2024 onwards. For the time being until 20 June, U Mobile is offering existing subscribers with a rebate of RM5. The telco adds that GX50 will officially be discontinued from today onwards, and there’s no way to opt out from the upgrade.
