Earlier today, Sony gave us a chance to play around with the Alpha 9 III. This is the brand’s 3rd generation full-frame professional camera, featuring a new global shutter system and blackout-free feature, along with 120 fps shooting and AI processing unit inside it.
As for the technical specifications of the Alpha 9 III, here’s a quick breakdown: The camera features a 24.6MP Exmor RS CMOS sensor. Coupled with the newly developed Global shutter system, its exposes and reads all the pixels simultaneously that, as we’ll explain a little further down, it can can capture fast-moving subject with no distortion.
Then there’s the BIONZ XR image processing engine inside the Alpha 9 III that Sony says has more than eight times more processing power than the previous generation Alpha 9. With the new engine, the camera is able to capture high-quality, 14-bit RAW images, across all shooting modes.
Around the outside, the Alpha 9 III features two separate wheels – one for the multiple modes, while the other governs the shooting and focus modes. Even the shutter button has undergone a slight redesign, where it is now angled a little more, which Sony says allows for a more comfortable grip and shooting experience.
Now, I should make it clear that I’m not a professional photographer by trade and the pictures that I took around the venue were also done in a controlled environment. The final results were pictures with and incredible amount of detail retention, clarity, and all of it done with an extremely high shutter speed. Sony reps explained that the camera’s Expanse shot was even capable of tracking the subject in my viewfinder with high accuracy, and it did.
But the most impressive feature about the Alpha 9 III was made evident with high-speed photography and its predictive capture mode, or pre-capture. The feature’s name is pretty self-explanatory: Sony set up the camera to capture a shot of an arrow being shot through a water-filled balloon, and my objective was to capture the moment the arrow pierced the target. Easier said than done, I know, but thanks to the onboard AI and pre-capture, it actually took the picture of the moment many frames before my finger was able to register it and press down on the shutter button.
You can preorder the Sony Alpha 9 III, with first shipments expected to commence from 16 January onwards. The camera retails at RM29,299 for the body alone. Customers who preorder the camera will also receive a CFExpress Type A memory card and NP-FZ100 battery as free gifts, while stocks last.
