Qualcomm officially launched its Snapdragon 7+ Gen2 mobile SoC this week. The new mobile platform is the successor to its previous generation Snapdragon 7 Gen1 chipset and unlike the more powerful Snapdragon 8 Series, this platform is skipping an entire generation, quite literally.

In terms of features and specifications, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen2 uses the same octa-core processor, in which its Kryo CPU cores run in a 1+3+4 configuration. On that note, those same CPU cores are now able to deliver peak speeds of up to 2.91GHz.

At the same time, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen2’s Adreno GPU cores are now able to deliver twice the performance that its predecessor was once capable of, and double the AI performance to boot. As for its power efficiency while gaming, Qualcomm says that consumers will be looking at a 13% improvement in power efficiency, across the board.

Surprisingly, there isn’t a lot of detailed specifications of the new Snapdragon 7+ Gen2 SoC, but the mobile chipmaker does have a lot of fluff written about the new features it will provide. These include a new Auto Variable Rate Shading (VRS) feature for gaming, as well as Volumetric Rendering that supposedly adds a new level of realism to mobile games.

The Snapdragon 7+ Gen2 also features a new 18-bit triple ISP, allowing mobile phone camera sensors linked to it to snap up to 30 images, and then merging them into one shot, to provide a brighter, clearer shot taken in the dark. It also will support sensor sizes of up to 200MP.

The Snapdragon 7+ Gen2 is also flanked by the Snapdragon X62 5G Modem-RF system, allowing downlink speeds of up to 4.4Gbps. Lastly, the chipset also supports the chipmaker’s latest Quick Charge 5 fast-charging technology, which recharges phones fitted with the chipset from zero to 50% in just five minutes.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 7+ Gen2 will be available in the smartphones of partner brands, including Xiaomi and realme, starting this month. As to which devices will be sporting them, we’ll just have to wait and see.
