NVIDIA Quietly Ships Out RTX 4090 With New AD102-301 GPU

The change of GPU was clearly unexpected.

It is being reported that NVIDIA has already begun shipping out new versions of its GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition graphics cards with a new AD102-301 GPU. The thing is, no one in the gaming industry was entirely expecting the change of GPU, especially for this tier.

The change to the AD102-301 GPU on the RTX 4090 was first discovered by Redditor cavitysearch123, who received what they say was the “newest” FE version of the card, after nearly three months of downtime. cavitysearch123 says that this appears to be the one of the first cards to ship with the new GPU. The punchline here is: the rollout of the new GPU wasn’t expected, least of all on a card like the RTX 4090.

For context, the original RTX 4090 FE SKU, when it first shipped out, used an AD102-300 GPU. With the AD102-301, this GPU was initially reported as having a lower maximum power limit. Where the original 300 GPU would run at 1.1V, this GPU would run at 1.07V.That last detail about the lower 1.07V voltage of the AD102-301 GPU was confirmed after cavitysearch123 ran it through MSI Afterburner and ASUS GPU Tweak.

Despite the drop in the maximum power limit, it is unlikely that the new AD102-301 in NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 FE will have any performance impact or run any worse than its AD102-300 counterparts.

That said, you can check out our in-depth review of the RTX 4090 FE that we published back when it first launched. Simply put, the card is basically a monster of a graphics card, with more than enough power to ray-traced titles like Cyberpunk 2077 at an average framerate of 220 fps at 4K, and that was with the now readily available DLSS 3.0 activated.

Aside from the GPU change, the rest of the specs of the RTX 4090 remains the same. You still get the same 24GB GDDR6X graphics memory, 384-bit memory bus, 16834 CUDA cores, 512 Tensor cores, and 128 RT Cores.
