The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is equipping its motorcycle enforcement unit with 128 surveillance cameras to detect traffic offenders and monitor road users passing through roadblocks in hotspot areas during this Raya season. Specifically, the unit is using GoPro Max cameras which are able to capture 360-degrees footage.

JPJ will be focusing on spotting nine main traffic offences that have been found to be the cause of fatal traffic accidents. Some of the offences include not wearing safety helmets or seat belts, over-taking at double lines, violating traffic lights, using a phone while driving, and overloaded commercial vehicles.

JPJ Director-General Zailani Hashim said that when the offences are caught on camera, the offenders will first be called in for questioning before action is taken against them. The operation which will last until 9 May already kicked into high gear as 508 summonses have already been issued from 9 PM to 12 AM on the first day of the operation alone to 279 out of 1,137 vehicles that were inspected for various offences, including driving without a license and expired road tax.

The department also recently asked members of the public to help with its Ops Hari Raya Aidilfitri by reporting any traffic violations they witness through the e-Aduan section of the JPJ Info app although this feature is only available for Android at the moment. If you’re travelling during this Raya season, do take the proper safety precautions and remember to follow PLUS’ travel time advisory in order to optimise your travel time.
