Alleged NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series Flagship GPU May Ship Out With 600W TDP

Seems like the trend of power-hungry cards is picking up once more.

A new rumour that has recently been making its rounds, suggesting that NVIDIA’s top-tier, next-generation GeForce RTX graphics card is expected to break past the 500W barrier and consume far more than that. How much more, you ask? According to rumours, around 600W alone.

Rumours of the card’s existence came to light after prominent leakster kopite7kime (@kopite7kimi) tweeted that sources close to them said that a 600W variant of the “XX90” had been confirmed, although it was still too early to talk about it.

There are a few takeaways that we can possibly digest from this rumour. The first is the timing of kopite7kime’s rumour: as Videocardz points out, cooling solutions for next-generation GPUs are typically designed months ahead of its launch and availability, which is how the leakster was able to get that one bit of information out of their source.

Someone told me the xx90 with 600W TGP has been confirmed.
I think it's too early to talk about it.

The second point is that just because a card is capable of pulling 600W of power at full whack, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it will constantly sustain that amount of power whenever it is running heavy workloads.

Thirdly, a 600W TGP for a GPU isn’t technically within the realm of impossibility. Some of you may remember back in October last year, we reported that AiB partners for NVIDIA were working on a new 16-pin, 12VHPWR power connector that could channel 600W via a single cable. Adding on to that point, there are custom-cooled cards on the current market that are already capable of drawing north of 400W. Two such examples would be the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3090 that can pull as much as 480W from the wall, and the other being Sapphire’s Radeon RX 6900XT TOXIC Liquid graphics card, which has a maximum TGP of 400W.

Once again, this is still all unconfirmed and as with all rumours and unconfirmed stories, we advise you to apply a liberal dose of scepticism here.
