The Marvel Cinematic Universe can do no wrong. Spider-Man: Far From Home, which received highly positive reviews from critics (90% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 7.45 average score) and audiences (95% on Rotten Tomatoes) has now grossed $US 1 billion at the global box office. According to Forbes, it has grossed $US 333 million at the North American box office and approximately $US 672 million outside of North America.
These stats are fascinating for a number of reasons. For one, all three Marvel Cinematic Universe movies that have come out this year have made at least $US 1 billion dollars each at the global box office — Captain Marvel raked in $US 1.1 billion while Avengers: Endgame stands on top of the box office mountain with a $US 2.791 billion cume. The MCU has never had a flop, but this would be the first time that all its movies released in a single year have grossed more than $US 1 billion.
What’s even more surprising is that Far From Home is the first Spider-Man movie sans inflation to actually join the billion-dollar club, which now houses 40 films (9 of which are MCU movies and 22 of which are currently owned/co-owned by Disney). Prior to Far Far Home, the highest-grossing Spider-Man film was Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, which raked in $US 890 million at the global box office.
Check out the full ranking below. I’ve colour coded it according to franchises — red (MCU), blue (Sam Raimi’s), green (Marc Webb’s), yellow (Sony’s animated)
- Spider-Man: Far From Home ($US 1 billion and counting)
- Spider-Man 3 ($US 890 million)
- Spider-Man: Homecoming ($US 880 million)
- Spider-Man ($US 821 million)
- Spider-Man 2 ($US 783 million)
- The Amazing Spider-Man ($US 757 million)
- The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($US 709 million)
- Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse ($US 375 million)
The next thing to look out for is how high up the film will rank by the end of its run. Can it zoom past the likes of Toy Story 3 and Transformers: Age of Extinction? Will it go on to beat Captain Marvel and Aquaman ($US 1.14 billion)? We’ll have to wait and see how the film performs come this weekend.
Spider-Man: Far From Home is currently screening in Malaysian cinemas.
