TikTok, a massively popular video app which has a huge following throughout the world including Malaysia is now no longer available for Apple and Google devices in India. This is due to a court order in southern Tamil Nadu that has asked the federal government to ban the app.
The government then submitted a letter to Apple and Google in order to request the removal of the TikTok app from App Store and Google Play. By today, the app was then gone from both platforms.
According to the court, the order was released after it found that the app might encourage pornography and could be used by sexual predators that seeking underage users. However, the developer of the app, Bytedance has decided to challenge the court order by citing freedom of speech rights although the company’s request to suspend the ban order was denied.
Meanwhile, we don’t expect a similar move to be taken by the government in Malaysia. Nevertheless, the move by India has definitely set a precedent and it is certainly something that developers out there might need to look at.
