MediaTek has released a new System on a Chip (SoC) called the A-Series. Targeted at the lower-end of the mid-range smartphone spectrum, it is designed to go against the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 series SoC.
The first chip in the line is the Helio A22. Manufactured on the 12nm FinFET manufacturing process, it features a quad-core CPU with four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.0GHz. The GPU is a PowerVR GE8320.
The SoC can support modern features such as dual-camera sensors (either 13MP+8MP or single 21MP), 4G LTE Cat 5 connectivity with speeds of up to 300Mbps down and 150Mbps up, and Bluetooth 5.0 on board. Finally, MediaTek says that the SoC can support AI functionalities thanks to full support for the Android Neural Networks API (Android NNAPI).
Xiaomi Redmi 6A which will be made available in Malaysia next week is said to be the first smartphone to feature the new Helio A22. More models from other manufacturers should be in the pipeline in the months to come.
