Blackmagic Introduces eGPU Enclosure Designed For MacBooks

Blackmagic has introduced the Blackmagic eGPU; an external graphics enclosure designed in collaboration with Apple. Unsurprisingly, it’s meant to pair with Apple MacBooks and is sold exclusively though Apple stores.

The vaguely Mac Pro-esque eGPU comes with an ATI Radeon Pro 580 with 8GB of GDDR5 memory. Providing a substantial upgrade over the regular custom Radeon GPUs found in Macbook Pros.

The eGPU also features additional ports beyond the necessary Thunderbolt 3 connection. This includes a HDMI 2.0 port, four USB 3 ports and a spare Thunderbolt 3 port. It should be pointed out that while Blackmagic promotes this as an Apple product, the Thunderbolt 3 connection is system agnostic. Which means that the eGPU should be compatible with any system that supports the technology, i.e Windows 10 machines.

The Blackmagic eGPU is intended to be used with MacBook Pros and iMacs running macOS 10.13.6 High Sierra or higher. It has a sticker price of US$ 699 (RM 2,829) and is available from the US Apple web store plus selected retail outlets. There’s no telling if it will be arriving in Malaysia, but we wouldn’t get our hopes up.
