A new patent filed at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) by Huawei suggests that it is developing a new smartwatch. What makes this filing extra interesting is that Huawei is calling this a gaming watch.
From the patent literature, the gaming watch from Huawei will use gestures to control the UI and other general operation. This includes scrolling, selecting and interacting with apps on the watch, mostly using the touch-sensitive wrist straps. Different controls exist for different orientations too.
The patent also calls for a touch sensitive wrist strap that doubles both as a controller and keyboard. Allowing users to take off their watch to play games. That said, the illustration shows a somewhat awkward design for controlling a game on a smartwatch.
The patent filing is not an indication that Huawei will create a new smartwatch with gaming functionality, rather it is an exercise of confirming ideas on a global stage. Still, if this becomes a real product, it will be an interesting device to look out for in the market.
