A series of job listings has revealed that Facebook is looking to start building its own SOCs. There’s no telling what the social media company has in store, although this may have something to do with its less than secret plans to produce hardware.
Facebook is said to be working on its own smart speaker. A device that has had its release delayed due to the Cambridge Analytica scandal that has dogged the company. There’s also the standalone Oculus Go virtual reality headset; which runs on a Qualcomm processor and removes the need to be attached to a PC.
It’s not entirely surprising that yet another technology company is looking to start its own semiconductor team. Although, this is usually confined to companies that already make hardware and want more control over their products.
Bloomberg believes that Facebook’s team could be focused on developing ASICs for its servers and artificial intelligence efforts.
Either way, there is little anyone can do except speculate about the nature of the listings. If anything, it’ll be several years before we see the results of the project.
