Photo Essay: The Major League Dota 2 Tournament in Iskandar, Johor

Last weekend, seven international and one local Dota 2 teams competed in The Major League in Iskandar, Johor – more specifically, at the EduCity Sports Arena. Filipino Dota 2 team Execration won the tournament after beating former TI finalist Ehome 2-1, and the team goes home RM135,000 richer.

It was certainly an interesting Dota 2 tournament, especially for the esports scene in Malaysia. If you’ve missed The Major League, worry not – here’s a quick look at what went down at the tournament.

The tournament kicked off with Execration against iG Vitality; Execration won 2-1.

HighGround, the wild card entry and the only all-Malaysian team in the tournament. Unfortunately, HighGround was eliminated by Ehome on the second day.

Eager fans could take some pictures with various cosplayers at the event too.

A number of food trucks were readily available outside the main arena.

Once a match starts, fans are not allowed to enter or leave the main arena. Those who did not manage to get into the arena can watch the game outside instead.

Think you can take down Roshan in five minutes with your friend? That’s one of the challenges available here.

Of course Ursa isn’t allowed.

The crowd certainly built up for the final match between Execration and Ehome.

The winner of The Major League, Execration.

While The Major League isn’t a Minor or Major Dota 2 tournament, it was definitely an entertaining event with some very exciting matches. Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come for the esports scene in Malaysia. The next major Dota 2 tournament will be taking place early next year in Genting for ESL One, and it will be the first Dota 2 Minor happening on our shores.
