In a bit of a surprise move, LG has officially announced the arrival of its latest flagship smartphone, the LG G6 in the Malaysian market. To be available from the first week of May 2017, the device will retail for RM2,999.

LG does not have a very good track record of bringing its latest smartphones on time, and have been known to focus on its more popular home appliances in Malaysia. The LG G5, for example, came to Malaysia via distributor Zitron in September 2016 – seven months after its MWC 2016 unveiling.

Nonetheless, LG may have good reason to bring in the G6 on time in Malaysia – it is easily one of the most interesting smartphones released this year. The G6 is one of only two smartphones in the world today with a new display aspect ratio: 18:9 instead of 16:9, giving it more vertical display space.

Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset paired with 4GB of RAM, the G6 also packs 64GB of UFS 2.0 storage with a microSD card slot. It’s also got a dual 13MP rear camera setup that’s different from those we’ve seen on Huawei and Apple – one is a regular f/1.8 shooter with OIS while the other is a 13MP f/2.4 sensor fitted with a 125-degree FOV wide-angle lens.

But of course, the most interesting feature is the new 5.7-inch QHD+ (2880 x 1440) Full Vision display and its 18:9 aspect ratio; it also supports the HDR10 standard for mobile displays. Other notable specs in the list include a 3,300mAh battery, USB Type C connector, rear fingerprint sensor, 5MP front facing camera, a 32-bit Quad DAC for exceptional audio playback, and dual SIM slots (4G/3G).

The LG G6 will officially be in stores from the first week of May 2017 for RM2,999 in three colours: Astro Black, Ice Platinum, and Mystic White. For a limited time, all purchases of the LG G6 will come with a free flip case worth RM174. For more about the LG G6, check out our first impressions from MWC 2017.
