Samsung is set to take advantage of it’s facial recognition technology by using it for financial transactions. The idea is that people will have yet another option for verifying their identity when using electronic payment systems.
Additional biometric verification is set to be released with the upcoming Galaxy S8; at least according to a report from Bloomberg. It sounds like Samsung is planning to combine fingerprints, an iris scan, and facial recognition to create a more secure solution for contactless payments.
Facial recognition already exists on Samsung phones. It is currently only available for unlocking the device, and has not been used for more sensitive communications. Iris scanning has similarly been around for about the same amount of time. Although, it’s quite as useful in its current state.
For the most part, people seem to prefer the fingerprint reader option. As evident by the proliferation of scanners on top level smartphones across all manufacturers.
Samsung has supposedly been working with banks to implement this new verification system. However, neither party has commented on the matter.
The Galaxy S8 is set to be revealed at the end of the month, and we’re likely to hear more about this at the event.
