There’s a Water-Resistant Variant of the Sony Xperia X Compact, but Only for Japan

Water resistance is one of the main appeals of Sony Xperia smartphones, but recently, this feature is reserved only for the flagship device of the series; these include the Sony Xperia X Performance and the more recent Xperia XZ. However, oddly enough, the mid-range Xperia X Compact is IP65/IP68-rated for the Japanese market.

While the IP65/IP68 rating is quite odd (devices usually only have one IP rating), this means that the Sony Xperia X Compact is as dust- and water-resistant as the higher-end Xperia XZ, which also has both IP ratings. It’s worth noting that the global variant of the X Compact – including Malaysian units – does not feature any form of water resistance.

Aside from the addition of water-resistance, other specifications of the Japanese market Xperia X Compact is the same as the global model. These include a 4.6-inch 720p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 processor paired with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, a 23MP rear camera with Sony’s triple image sensing technology, a 5MP front-facing shooter, as well as a modest 2,700mAh battery.

Interestingly, the Japanese market will also get a Soft Pink colour variant of the Sony Xperia X Compact, which is not made available anywhere else. Evidently, Sony is focusing quite a bit on the Japanese market, and we imagine consumers in other regions won’t be thrilled by these exclusive colour and feature.
