Leica camera has announced that its latest premium product, the new Leica S (Typ 007), is now available for pre-order in Malaysia. Featuring a 37.5MP image sensor, legendary Leica lens and plenty of modern touches, the Leica S is touted as the “first choice for photographers who refuse to make compromises”.

The Leica S (Typ 007) is the company’s latest update to the compact and reliable medium-format system. It packs a massive 37.5MP sensor tuned for this particular camera, and has a faster and more precise autofocus from previous iterations. The S also supports a total of 16 Leica lenses (10 Leica S lenses and 6 Leica CS lenses), tuned to work best on Leica systems. At the back, there’s a 3-inch TFT LCD display, and a pentaprism viewfinder above it. This German-made camera features a body made from die-cast aluminium with high-grip plastic coating, a magnesium alloy top deck, and a baseplate made from fibreglass reinforced polycarbonate. This 1.26kg body is also dust- and splash-proof.

The sensor inside the S is a 37.5MP CMOS sensor that shoots 7,500 x 5,000 stills. It is 56% larger than a 35mm sensor with a dynamic range of 15 stops. This sensor is paired with a new Leica MAESTRO II ISP, produced with Fujitsu. It features specs including a dual-core processor, low shutter lag, approximately 3.5fps burst shots, an ISO range of 100 to 12,500, offering superior image quality in both RAW and JPG. In addition, the Leica S is also an extremely capable video camera. Besides being able to shoot Full HD footage in 30fps, 25fps and 24fps, the S also shoots in 4K (4,096 x 2,160) at 24fps.

What’s interesting is in the modern touches Leica has added into the S. The Typ 007 packs integrated WiFi and GPS for greater usability and post-editing purposes. The Leica S app for Android and iOS lets users connect and use their smartphones as a remote shutter and offer live previews of images that have been taken. The location information stored in each image helps users sort their images via geo-tags on Adobe Lightroom, which is included with every purchase of the Leica S alongside the company’s own Leica Image Shuttle 3.0 software.
