It looks like mobile phone storage is going to be a lot more affordable in the future. Samsung recently announced a new high-performance mobile memory storage based on Embedded MultiMediaCard (eMMC) 5.0 technology, and will bring 128GB, 3-bit-per-cell mobile storage for the smartphone and tablet mass market.
128GB of internal storage is nothing new for the mobile phone industry. Quite a number of flagship smartphones already come with 128GB storage option like the Apple iPhone 6 for example. In fact, just three weeks ago, Samsung announced new Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.0 that brings 128GB worth of internal storage to smartphones. While the UFS 2.0 one is targeted at high-end smartphones, the eMMC 5.0 one aims to bring high internal storage to the mid-market smartphone segments.
For years now, lower end smartphones have always featured smaller internal memory of 8GB or 16GB. With the introduction of this new memory, prepare to see up to 128GB of storage on a budget mid-range smartphone in the future.
Specifications wise, the 128GB eMMC 5.0 delivers 260MB/s for sequential data reading – the same level of performance as the MLC NAND-based eMMC 5.1 memory. For random data read and write operations, it can handle up to 6,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second) and 5,000IOPS respectively – that’s sufficient for supporting high definition video processing and advanced multi-tasking feature. Samsung also adds that these IOPS speeds are approximately four to tem times faster respectively, than those of a typical external memory card.
Now, who says you need to fork out RM2,000 or even over RM3,000 to enjoy a better-specced smartphone?
