DiGi Launches Music Freedom App For Music Lovers

DiGi Music Freedom

DiGi has launched Music Freedom, a service that allows subscribers to stream music without using incurring data charges. At the heart of this is the Music Freedom app, that also gives fans the opportunity to claim free music tickets for live concerts.

Digi Music Freedom works by offering users the opportunity to buy a monthly music pass that stops the telco from charging the data use of music streaming services like Spotify or Deezer. Each pass only costs RM3 per month, which isn’t too much. Since it covers all data use of the service, this also includes the downloading of songs for offline play. It should be noted that the app itself does not stream music, and users will have to have access to another music streaming app.

Several major music streaming services have partnered with DiGi for Music Freedom, which include Deezer, Spotify, Rdio, and KKBox. Local radio platforms and music services like DiGi Music Play, hitz fm, ERA fm, and MY fm have also come on board.

Users will have to download and access the Music Freedom app to redeem their pass, after which they will be free to start up their preferred streaming app and never turn the music off. There is no word on how the free concert tickets will work just yet, but we will be waiting to see what DiGi has in store for its customers in the coming months.

While a Music Freedom pass does not include a premium subscription to any music streaming service, it should be noted that DiGi postpaid subscribers also have a free premium account with Deezer.

Music Freedom

This system is suspiciously similar to the App Pass feature on Opera Max, which is currently being tested through a partnership between Opera and DiGi’s parent company Telenor. Digi is also running a trial for App Pass, which allows for data charge free connections to Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram, Twitter, Mudah, and Youtube. It is not explicitly clear that Music Freedom is a version of App Pass, but they bear some striking similarities to each other.

Conspiracy theories aside, DiGi will be offering the music passes for free from today until 30 June 2015 to promote the launch of Music Freedom. All DiGi subscribers, be it postpaid or prepaid, with a valid data plan are welcome to download the Digi Music Freedom App for either Android or iOS and give it a try.
