MediaTek has recently announced its latest technology: triple-SIM support for 3G Android smartphones. Following the success of dual-SIM smartphones, especially in emerging markets where local telcos often have restrictive plans for Internet and calls, MediaTek’s latest triple-SIM technology aims to provide greater connectivity for Android smartphones.
While triple-SIM feature phones have been available for quite some time now, this technology has not debuted on smartphones. MediaTek’s triple-SIM technology solution not only allow the three SIM cards to be used simultaneously to make and receive calls, send SMS as well as transmit data, and remain in concurrent standby mode “without consuming excessive battery life”. MediaTek has also managed to rope in LG Electronics, who will manufacture the triple-SIM Android smartphones in the future.
