The Ferrari Luce is an oddball of a car. It’s the Italian carmaker’s first EV, and despite, or maybe because it was, being designed by famed designer Jony Ive’s company LoveFrom, the exterior does not have the look that you’d normally imagine from the brand. But there’s no accounting for taste, as someone has paid at an auction US$40 million (~RM162.4 million) for the very first one that rolled out of the assembly line.
To be clear though, the Ferrari Luce usually sells for EUR550,000 (~RM2.6 million) as announced when the car was first revealed, or US$600,000 (~RM2.4 million) when brought across the Atlantic. But as The Autopian reports, this specific Luce is special for more reasons than simply sporting chassis number 0. It is also a unique model made as part of the Ferrari Tailor Made Program, which means having parts that are not usually used to make the car.
Per the listing by auction house RM Sotheby’s, this specific Luce has an exterior that “is defined by an exclusive Madreperla Semi-Gloss finish, developed specifically for this car”. This lets the EV produce iridescent reflections that range from green to violet depending on the intensity and angle of the light. Inside, it features an equally exclusive Le Mans metallic leather in Perla, as well as a Grigio Corvana (natural medium grey) finish rather than just black. Fancy paint notwithstanding, the car ultimately looks pretty monochrome, with images depicting one that’s mostly black, white, and grey.
For what it’s worth, all proceeds for this specific Luce go to charity. Specifically, one called the Ferrari Foundation. And the person who paid US$40 million for the car still got a car with the performance befitting the badge. In case you missed it, the Luce does 0 – 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds and has a top speed of 310 km/h.
