SOCAR has announced that it will be ending its car-sharing service in Malaysia, with operations set to cease on 31 August 2026. The announcement was made through a notice on the company’s official app, where it also apologised for the late and sudden notification.
The company did not initially provide a reason for its decision to exit the Malaysian market. It did, however, ask users with remaining funds in their SOCAR Wallet to contact help@socar.my if they want to withdraw or request a refund.
After Eight Years In Malaysia
To recap, SOCAR launched its car-sharing service in Malaysia in 2018, allowing users to rent vehicles by the hour through its app. The service differentiated itself from traditional car rentals by allowing users to locate and unlock vehicles directly through their smartphones, without having to deal with a rental counter.
The company subsequently expanded its presence in the local mobility market with Trevo in 2020. Rather than operating its own fleet like SOCAR, the sister platform uses a peer-to-peer model that allows vehicle owners to list their cars for others to rent.
Trevo Appears Unaffected
For now, the shutdown appears to be limited to SOCAR. Trevo remains operational and is seemingly unaffected, with the sister platform continuing to actively update its social media pages.
That is notably different from SOCAR’s own online presence, which has been relatively quiet. Its latest social media update was dated May this year, although this alone does not indicate whether the company had already been preparing to wind down its Malaysian operations.
SOCAR has not indicated whether Trevo will remain under the same ownership or if anything will change for its users following the shutdown. The company has also not provided any details on what will happen to its fleet after the service ends.
