OpenAI is rolling out several updates to its ChatGPT platform starting today. The changes affect both free and paid users, with GPT-5.6 Luna becoming the default model for Free and Go subscribers and GPT-5.6 Sol receiving a number of improvements for Plus and Pro users.
However, the company notes that the latter only applies to the regular Chat experience. The version of GPT-5.6 Sol used for Work and Codex is not changing as part of this release, it added.
Unlimited Text Chats, New “Think” Feature Coming Soon
OpenAI also announced that unlimited GPT-5.6 Luna chat access for both Free and Go users will be available soon. However, there is currently a discrepancy over when this particular rollout may occur, with the company’s blog stating that unlimited chat availability is coming next week while its post on X says tomorrow instead. Regardless of when it arrives, the company notes that the feature remains subject to abuse guardrails, while limits will continue to apply to file uploads, image generation and other tools.
Around the same time, OpenAI will also introduce a new “Think” feature for Free and Go users. This allows users to give the model more time to reason through a question when a straightforward response is unlikely to be sufficient.
The feature is intended for more complicated queries that involve multi-step reasoning, planning or other tasks that benefit from additional processing. For everyday questions, users can continue using the default chat experience without activating the additional reasoning mode.
GPT-5.6 Sol New Features
Meanwhile, OpenAI is updating GPT-5.6 Sol for ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers. The model will now power both Instant responses and deeper reasoning within the Chat experience, which the company says should provide a more consistent experience instead of requiring users to switch between different models.
OpenAI claims that the updated GPT-5.6 Sol is also better at producing focused and factually accurate answers. In an internal evaluation involving financial, medical and legal prompts requiring factual details, responses containing at least one factual error were 68% less common with GPT-5.6 Sol compared to GPT-5.5 Instant.
The company said GPT-5.6 Luna also performed better in the same evaluation, with responses containing at least one factual error being 62% less common compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. OpenAI noted that the improvements are particularly relevant when answers depend on dates, numbers, sources, rules or assumptions.
New Slider To Control Reasoning
Starting today, Plus and Pro subscribers are gaining a new slider that allows them to control how much reasoning ChatGPT applies to each response. The control is available on web, mobile and desktop, allowing users to prioritise speed for simple queries or increase the reasoning effort for tasks such as planning, research, writing, coding and decision-making.
OpenAI said the updated GPT-5.6 Sol is also designed to better adapt the length of its responses according to the context. It should provide more concise answers for simple questions while giving more detailed responses when dealing with complicated tasks, while also reducing unnecessary formatting.
The company added that the model is more likely to correct inaccurate information instead of simply agreeing with the user. OpenAI said this is part of its effort to make responses more useful across different types of everyday conversations.
