Sony officially launched the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS, its latest super telephoto lens. While it is not an Alpha or G Lens, this is the first super telephoto lens Sony has released in the past several years.
As per its designation, the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS is a zoom lens with focal lengths between 100mm and 400mm with adjustable aperture between F5.6 and F8. Overall, the lens weighs in at 654g, making it considerably lighter than most of the professional lenses Sony has. Paired with an Alpha 7, Sony says that the overall weight of the system still falls within the sub-1kg category.
Glancing through some of the other key features, the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS is also able to make use of the compression effect, giving pictures the effect of having subjects and the background appearing closer together than they are. “Excellent image quality is offered no matter what distance users intend to shoot, thanks to its optical design featuring two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and two aspherical elements which reduce chromatic and other aberrations, delivering clear rendering across the entire zoom range.”
Additionally, the lens also accommodates fast and precise autofocus through a linear motor that is also quiet. To that end, it also supports high-speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking at up to 120 fps, especially when paired with the Alpha 9 III. There is also built-in optical image stabilisation for steadier shots.
