BYD has launched the Yangwang U8L, after its official unveiling at the Auto Shanghai Show earlier in April. As per our initial report, the “L” in its name refers to the long wheelbase of the six-seat SUV, compared to its base model, the U8.

Specs-wise, the car comes with a wheelbase that measures 3,250mm, which is 200mm longer than the standard U8. Additionally, the SUV has a length of 5,400mm, a width of 2,049mm and a height of 1,921mm.

The extra length notwithstanding, the U8L retains most of the design elements from the U8, starting with its patterned grille that blends seamlessly with the intricate LED lighting signature. The headlights feature a split design, combining sleek upper units with vertically stacked daytime running lights.

Around the back, the SUV adopts vertical taillights, while the external rear spare tyre has been removed to punctuate its luxurious character. Other distinguishing features include a contrasting black roof, shield-shaped alloy rims, and concealed door handles for a cleaner, more sophisticated look.

The interior of the U8L features a 2+2+2 six-seat layout, while the cockpit comes with a 12.8-inch infotainment system, 23.6-inch instrument display, and AR-HUD (head-up display). If these screens weren’t enough, there is also a screen for the passenger and a 21.4-inch ceiling screen. All of these are powered by BYD’s DiLink 300 system.

The luxury of the U8L is further elevated with zero-gravity seats in the second row, equipped with an 18-point massage function, smart armrest screen, leg rest, and a foldable table. Enhancing comfort and convenience, the cabin also includes a heating and cooling refrigerator along with 13 power and USB ports. Other premium touches include a 1.7-square metre panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, and 128-colour ambient lighting.

The SUV is also fitted with 32 Dynaudio speakers, some of which are seamlessly integrated into the headrests. Additionally, the intelligent privacy windows automatically adjust shading based on surrounding light conditions.

As for its performance, the U8L is powered by a hybrid system that combines a 2.0T engine with BYD’s e4 platform – it’s a quad-motor architecture with one motor on each wheel. Together, it delivers 880 kW and 1,280 Nm of torque, giving it a 0-100 km/h acceleration speed of 3.5 seconds.

The four motors draw energy from a 55.53 kWh Blade battery pack, providing up to 200 km of pure electric range and taking 13.5 minutes to replenish from 30% to 80% with a DC charger. When paired with the engine, the U8L achieves a CLTC range of up to 1,160 km.

It comes equipped with BYD’s advanced DiSus-P body control system, an intelligent suspension that actively manages vehicle dynamics for ride comfort and stability. The SUV also supports unique capabilities such as the ‘tank turn’ manoeuvre and a “blown tyre stability” function. Additionally, it features an “emergency flotation” mode, enabling the vehicle to temporarily float through shallow water when needed.

In terms of safety, the U8L is equipped with the “God’s Eye” driving assistant. Breaking it down, it utilises three lidars, five millimetre-wave radars, 14 ultrasonic radars, and 18 cameras to realise high-speed NOA, city NOA, automatic parking assist, and remote parking assist. Other safety aspects include airbags and the infrared vision system that can detect objects at a distance between 120 metres and 300 metres.

As to how much it costs, the BYD Yangwang U8L SUV has a price tag of RMB1.28 million (~RM 757,000), with deliveries expected to begin late this month. At the time of writing, there is no confirmation from the automaker if the vehicle will be available in other markets outside China.
