Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd is denying recent claims on social media that the recently relaunched Aerotrain service at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport(KLIA) has broken down. In a statement shared with Free Malaysia Today (FMT), the airport operator assured that the service was only temporarily suspended as heavy rainfall had caused water to accumulate in the tunnel.

For context, news of the Aerotrain’s breakdown by the Places and Food page on Facebook went viral earlier today, claiming that the service had halted at 1:32pm earlier today. This was then corroborated by others on social media and Reddit, with several users claiming that the issue was caused by a passenger, who caused the train’s doors to jam.

As per MAHB’s statement, none of these speculations were true. It added that the temporary suspension began at 11am today, and the transportation of passengers to the airport’s satellite terminal was uninterrupted as they were able to use the shuttle bus service.

“The tunnel’s drainage system includes pumps designed to handle water ingress during severe weather conditions. However, one of the drainage pumps experienced a technical fault during today’s heavy rainfall, preventing the automatic removal of accumulated water. As a safety precaution, train operations were suspended until the water was manually cleared and the tracks were confirmed safe for use,” MAHB said.

According to the airport operator, Aerotrain service resumed at 12.15pm once full clearance was obtained from the technical and safety teams. It added that its technical teams will continue to monitor the system closely to ensure that any operational adjustments are made immediately.
