The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has introduced the Mobile Integrated Radio and Internet Communication System (PRIME). It is a new initiative done in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications, aimed at improving disaster response and public communication capabilities nationwide.

The system is deployed via a specially outfitted vehicle and integrates a range of technologies including satellite, cellular, two-way radio, Wi-Fi and drones. According to MCMC, this setup enables seamless communication in disaster zones and other areas where traditional network infrastructure may be unavailable or compromised.

Designed around the principle of “Connectivity Without Boundaries” (Ketersambungan Tanpa Batasan), PRIME acts as a temporary communication support platform during rescue missions, emergency coordination, aid distribution and information broadcasting. MCMC highlighted that the system ensures stable, flexible and reliable connectivity, bolstering cooperation between the commission and key strategic agencies during crises.

Beyond emergency operations, PRIME is also intended for community outreach, with plans for it to support the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI). As a mobile digital hub, it will bring internet access, services and digital engagement to selected communities, particularly in rural areas.

MCMC adds that three PRIME units will be developed in phases. The first, launched today, will operate from the commission’s headquarters to serve Peninsular Malaysia. Two more units are planned for Sabah and Sarawak, which are expected to be operational by the end of 2025.
