Eric Migicovsky, former Pebble founder and now head of Core Devices, has confirmed that his team’s upcoming Core mobile app for Android and iOS will be compatible with several legacy Pebble models. In a recent blog update, he revealed that the new app is designed to work not only with Core’s upcoming watches, but also with older devices like the Pebble Time (Steel and Round variants) and Pebble 2.

This development is significant for longtime users of the legacy smartwatch, many of whom have relied on unofficial workarounds and sideloaded apps ever since Fitbit, which acquired Pebble in 2016, ended support in 2018. The revival of first-party app support could bring renewed functionality and longevity to these ageing wearables, allowing them to sync notifications and watch faces more reliably with modern phones.

The new app is part of Core Devices’ efforts to reimagine the Pebble experience through its next-generation watches. Migicovsky has even invited owners of the aforementioned Pebble models to join Core Devices’ open beta testing programme to help evaluate the new app’s performance. In regards to the company’s upcoming wearables, Migicovsky says the US$149 (~RM660) Core 2 Duo e-paper smartwatch is nearly ready for mass production, and is expected to ship to pre-order customers in July or August. Meanwhile, the higher-end US$225 (~RM996) Core 2 Time, which features a touchscreen, sleep and step tracking as well as a metal frame, is still on track for release later this year, with engineering samples expected within the coming weeks.
