ARM Teases Next-Generation Lumex CSS Chipset

But it was very vague on the performance, specs, or who is helping to build it.

Earlier today, ARM gave the attending media a very brief taste on its next-generation Lumex CSS chipset, with a heavy emphasis on “brief”.

By that, we mean that the semiconductor maker didn’t share a lot of details, save for the name of the CPU and GPU modules that shape the chipset. The CPU cores will be called “Travis”, while the GPU – Mali, of course – will be known as “Drage”, but that’s about it.

ARM promised that the next-gen Lumex CSS’ Travis CPU cores would provide double-digit IPC performance Gains and AI Acceleration, with Drage providing “increased GFX capabilities”. Additionally, Travis will also feature Scalable Matrix Extensions (SME).

Just to be clear, the CSS stands for Compute Subsystems, and as it name suggests, it refers to the different subsystems that you’d find in a computer system. In this case, it is in reference to the chip’s numerous departments, such as the processors, memory, software, and even the onboard storage modules.

Beyond that, ARM wasn’t sharing anything else about the next-gen Lumex, let alone any details about the yet unannounced Arm-based N1 series Chips that MediaTek and NVIDIA are supposedly expected to announce this week. Thing is, NVIDIA made no mention of it during its keynote earlier today, meaning that MediaTek could announce it during its own keynote tomorrow.
