Google has announced that it will be using AI to both identify and also protect you from “the latest scams” while you are using its Chrome browser. The internet search giant says that the desktop version of said browser will be getting Gemini Nano which works on-device, with the goal of making this also available on Android in the future.

Starting with the desktop version, Google says that by adding Gemini Nano into the equation, the Enhanced Protection mode of Chrome is getting an additional layer of defence against online scams. The on-device nature of the LLM is claimed to allow for both “instant insight on risky websites” even on new scams, as well as faster adaptability against said new scams.

The company says that “our goal is to expand this protection to Android devices and even more types of scams in the future”. In the meantime though, Android devices get AI-powered warnings against scammy notifications that escape the confines of the Chrome browser. You can choose to unsubscribe from them, or view the blocked content, and if the warning was shown incorrectly, you can allow future notifications from said website.

From the Google Blog post, the rollout of the latter has already begun. As for the former, the company says that you’ll get Gemini Nano within your chrome browser with the rollout of version 137 that’s launching this week. With there not being much left of the week, said update should arrive soon, providing it doesn’t run into any delays.
