vivo has recently released the newest addition to its V series, the V50 Lite, in Malaysia. The company has also given us the opportunity to have a look at the phone, so here are my first impressions of the mid-range device.
For starters, the V50 Lite comes in three colourways, which are Titanium Gold, Fantasy Purple, and Phantom Black. The model I’m getting acquainted with is the Titanium Gold, which according to vivo “captures the golden warmth of dusk”. I wouldn’t exactly call the phone gold, though. It’s a muted metallic shade that tends to look slightly pinkish in some lighting conditions. It’s an interesting hue for sure, and it feels quite classy.
The V50 Lite has glossy sides, just like its older sibling the V50. However, its flat edges make the shiny bits look less out of place. In fact, I think the shine adds some visual interest without making the phone look tacky. That is, as long as you don’t mind the obvious fingerprints it attracts anyway.
The device sports a 6.77-inch 1080p AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, making swiping and scrolling a pretty smooth experience. For the most part, the local peak brightness of 1,800 nits is sufficient, but not good enough for comfortable use under intense sunlight. The V50 Lite runs on a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset, and so far I haven’t experienced any issues while using the phone.
As for software, the V50 Lite comes with Funtouch OS 15 based on Android 15. I must admit I’m not seeing the “fun” in Funtouch so far, as it proves to not be very intuitive. The reliance on smart gestures makes things needlessly complicated, and it’s all too easy to activate Circle to Search or some other function while trying to do something else.
As for optics, the device sports a 50MP main camera and an 8MP wide-angle lens on the rear. Meanwhile, the front camera is a 32MP selfie shooter. I’ve taken a few shots here and there, but I can’t say I’m particularly impressed by its performance. Some colours will look washed out and dull, while other shades show up unnaturally dark.
The V50 Lite comes in 8GB + 256GB, 12GB + 256GB, and 12GB + 512GB configurations, priced at RM1,299, RM1,499, and RM1,699 respectively. I’ve been taking the phone for a spin, so expect a full review in the days to come.
